I duplicate the fractal into a new layer in Photoshop (CTRL-J). Then I turn it into a black and white image (CTRL-SHIFT-U). Then I adjust the contrast and brightness until its basically a black and white image - very few greys. I select the part of the image I want to get rid of, and hit the delete key. I apply the gold style to what's remaining.
