A lot of you have been asking that I do this tutorial. It answers how I create those designs using the pen tool. I hope it's clear and enjoyable. Good luck. For other tutorials - please see my gallery.
I still can't bring myself to learn the path tool, thought I tried several times, most recently yesterday, but the most important thing in this is: Command-Option-Shift-T aka Transform Again - which is like an Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe and Everything
...khm, do you have other overlooked tricks like this? O Oh, well, I doubt you realized this would help so much...
You're most welcome. I'm so glad it helped. It not only works on paths, but also to transform shapes and layers in a consistent way. Duplicate a layer and change it slightly, then press that key combination - and bang - a new layer continuing your change. Cool.
thank you , didn't use pen tool ... it confused me for some reason lol I got it to do somewhat what I wanted , but it was staying behind ? so I scrapped it and started over again using the line tool. worked just as easily for me if not easier ( I am so lazy with photoshop!! LOL ) I find all the short cuts sooner or later I went about it sort of hard way ... because I didn't use the commands you had listed. the only command you've got listed there that I seemed to do , was the copy, paste and shift rotate then , cause I am terribly lazy... the corners .. I copied the spirograph I made before plopped it in the corner warped it to fit the lines I had drawn in one corner and copied to the other 3 corners the background started off very bland. it was a black & blue render cloud that looked terribly ugly. so I used about 8 different brushes at insanely large sizes ( oversized them all ) and made blotches around it and mixed the blending until I liked it and there you have it
wasn't overly sure about the flare ... never used them on any of my others but I figured I'd have a go at it with this one.
very interesting technique Nathan , I never would of thought to try this .. and should have known better lol I shall try this , as I said in a reply before , if it doesn't work for me I'll do the same sort of thing , only using the line tool instead of the pen tool. it should by rights create the same sort of effects that you're creating here with the pen tool , just a bit more warping to do is the only difference
Wow, that's interesting. I just checked and it works fine on my computer. Sometimes, however, I've noticed that DeviantArt's coding causes some computers grief. I have another gallery at Caedes ([link]). My username there is also nmsmith.
Here's the address of the same tutorial on that site...
